On 14-16 December 2011, 26 non-governmental organisations working with people affected by trafficking in Karnataka came together for the first ever meeting of the Network for Anti-Trafficking – Karnataka (NAT-K).
The three-day event included workshops on networking; sexual health and HIV/AIDS; trafficking prevention; rescue operations; care and support; reintegration; advocacy and lobbying; and also included a session delivered by the Assistant Police Commissioner.
NAT-K’s innovative and unique approach will support those trafficked and sexually exploited, helping them access and claim their constitutional rights and reservations, especially in education, politics and employment. NAT-K also intends to hold district and local meetings to improve awareness raising and medical training in districts to test for and treat diseases such as sexually transmitted infections and HIV.
Members of the network were very excited its future. One participant stated: “We are working mainly with children in difficult circumstances like human trafficking. The network will help with lobbying, rescues and prevention.” Meetings will take place on a quarterly basis, bringing together representatives from national and international organisations, corporations, police, government, policy makers, judiciary, activists, media and academics to unite against trafficking in the state of Karnataka.
